The Hot Shot! field as seen in the FIRST game video

In Hot Shot!, competitors start in designated starting positions around the 10 by 10 feet field. When the competition starts, the robots attempt to release the balls from ball chutes at the corners of the field for their team and score them into any of the three goals. There are two goals in the center of the playing field, a high goal and a low goal. Each ball scored into the high goal earns the team 5 points, while scoring in the low goal only earns 1 point. During the last 30 seconds of the game, players may score into an outer scoring area which earns 10 points for each ball scored in it. There are two types of balls. The white balls are the normal scoring ball which earns points. In the last 30 seconds, a yellow ball could be dropped through the ball chute, and it doubles the score of all balls scored into that specific scoring area. Though it may seem simple, knowledge about the competition, skills in engineering and programming, as well as ingenuity are all needed if a team wishes to succeed.
